Re: First starlight for my new echelle

Hello Joan, this instrument looks very professional. Congratulations! The Richardson grating seems to make a big difference. I am also impressed by the large spectral coverage. I am glad you resolved the issues with ISIS processing. Too bad you did not make this fine instrument at a time when I was ...

Re: Astropy Data Reduction

Hello Stu, I have analyzed meteor spectra with different software for a while. Since this requires quite specific processing and I could find nothing suitable, i developed my own program. I used Python, also astropy, because it contains many of the required tools, eg. for reading images, transformin...

Re: KIC 9832227: Red nova in 2022 ?

Hello Joan, in the case that after all KIC 9832227 should evolve into a red nova I would expect it to be similar to a previous red nova V1309 Sco which erupted in 2008. It is described in a paper by R.Tylenda et. al. in A&A: https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/pdf/2011/04/aa16221-10.pdf It looks t...

Re: Nouveau Echelle Linx

Congratulations Joan, the LYNX gets better every day :D (I had the privilege to see some previous spectra). Maybe you make the collimator interchangeable with different focal length for higher resolution or fainter objects. My echelle was quite similar with a collimator f/6, which was too slow (a lo...

Re: Probable SN in NGC 6946

Hi Robin, in your post viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1744&start=10#p8255 I see only the first image clipped in Firefox, three out of the four clipped in Edge browser. In Paolos images, viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1744&start=20#p8259 no images clipped, the image info says e.g. 700px × 450px (Skaliert z...

Re: Probable SN in NGC 6946

Robin, the cutoff of the graphs depend on screen size in Pixels, scale of display of your browser and graph size. For my notebook with a reasonable display scale a graph width of about 600 to 800 pixels appears complete. Right click on an image in the forum and choose Image info to find out about th...

Re: M87 jet spectrum

Hello Olivier, I did not realize that the image scale on the spectrum is quite different from the scale on the image, so I understand now why it is quite difficult to extract the jet spectrum. You may try to mirror the 2D spectrum (flip vertically), align the two spectra and subtract them. Then you ...

Re: M87 jet spectrum

Hello Olivier, you may try to extract the jet spectrum by subtracting as background a region of the same width and distance from opposite the galaxy center, which should reduce the contribution of the galaxy spectrum (assumed symmetric). I do not know if you will see anything, at least in the raw 2D...

Re: Alt Az bug in Cartes du Ciel ?

Hi Robin, I can reproduce your error. You get the correct Azimut and altitude in the corner at left bottom if you switch your coordinates from EQ to AZ (button on the left menu bar). Of course, the azimuth should not depend on this selection. You should report the bug to CdC. My version is V3.11. Re...

Re: APM 08279+5255

Excellent work Etienne, just a small correction: you give the correct equation for the temperature, but then you give a wrong calculation. It should be: T(t1) = (2,725 * (1 + 3.8573) ) / (1+0) = 13.236 K You also write, that the universe is about 80% larger. Correct would be that it had about a 80% ...
