Re: SN 2024ggi a nearby type II supernova in NGC3621 (Dec -32 deg)
Thanks Olivier. Peter Velez and Hamish Barker also have some observations, so I think we may have pretty good coverage of this one. On this side of the Pacific we have been lucky with the El Nino weather this autumn. If we can keep up observations as it fades we may be able to model the SN, both in ...

And there's much more going on now. Nice fat H lines, as you'd expect from Type II.

Re: SN 2024ggi a nearby type II supernova in NGC3621 (Dec -32 deg)
And more structure. A bit noisier, though, especially at the red end. Whether down to terrible seeing (it was awful), moon , or what else I'm not quite sure.
The next few days are not going to be favourable for observing, so perhaps more over the weekend.

Re: SN 2024ggi a nearby type II supernova in NGC3621 (Dec -32 deg)
Further development - bit by bit. There was some high cloud around this evening, so a little more noise in spite of a longer exposure. Also there was a full moon at around the same azimuth as the target. So from here it can only get better.

Not much in the way of structure emerging tonight.

Re: SN 2024ggi a nearby type II supernova in NGC3621 (Dec -32 deg)
Thanks Robin. On Sunday I initially thought I might have pointed at the wrong object, but eventually decided it was about right for an early Type II. The forecast for the coming week here is pretty good, so will hopefully capture some structure as it emerges. I've just kicked off another exposure a ...

Re: SN 2024ggi a nearby type II supernova in NGC3621 (Dec -32 deg)
Well, the weather has been a little more cooperative in New Zealand. I got a spectrum on Sunday (though a little compromised by high cloud), and one on Tuesday night. GELATO classifies them as unreliable Type II, which is probably about as good as I can hope for. sn2024ggi_ 20240414_325_Tom Love.png...

Surprisingly, I have had good weather tonight. So here is my fresh Alpy spectrum as well.

Thanks Olivier. My weather forecast is terrible for the next week, so I think it's over to you for now!
