Excellent initiative Robin ... well done!
Assuming that replacing the ALPY grating is a feasible field modification (is it?) then the obvious question is why Shelyak haven't already offered this as an option, given the clear need for 'deep' spectra?

Re: Hello from New Zealand
Welcome aboard, especially as we are VERY short of amateur slit spectroscopists in the southern hemisphere. I have been watching the good work you have been doing on nova Cen with your SA100. I myself am in Melbourne and, as the amateur coordinator for the 2014 eta Car pro-am campaign, delighted to ...

eta Carinae 2014 periastron campaign
This is an early call for amateurs in the southern hemisphere to participate in an international pro-am spectroscopic campaign to monitor the periastron passage of eta Carinae, between May and September 2014 but mainly concentrated over July and August. Major observatories in Brazil, Chile, New Zeal...

Re: Supernova in NGC 1365
I didn't think I would be back on this SN but here is my effort from, a very windy, earlier tonight. It is interesting to note, in the composite plot, how the intensity has increased over the last two days.

Re: Supernova in NGC 1365
Another cloudless night but with hazy poor seeing, so my spectra is noisier than previous ones.If this better weather continues I will need to switch over to high-res work, which is piling up, so this may be my last spectra of this memorable SN.

Re: Supernova in NGC 1365
This Type Ia SN continues to evolve, with increasingly stronger MgII, FeII,SII and SiII absorption, as seen in my 13 Nov spectra. Note that I've shifted my coverage towards the red.

Re: Supernova in NGC 1365
Last night, 10 November, was my first chance to get a follow-up spectra of this SN, which apparently is close to its peak. The Type 1a profile is now very clearly defined ... GELATO gives a 100% match.

Re: Supernova in NGC 1365
Hi Robin, It wasn't that obvious in my 'off the edge' image of Ha, which looks more symmetrical, but in Terry's it is clearly asymmetrical with a blue shift on one side of the main spectra and maybe a small redshift on the other. Based on this I think you are right in suggesting an off-axis jet, pos...

Re: Supernova in NGC 1365
Hi Terry, Unfortunately I was only able to capture the Ha emission very close to the edge of my image (below), but I do see a small degree of curvature towards the blue each side of the main spectral line. H alpha.jpg If this is what you are referring to then I guess one explanation could be that th...
