Re: Supernova in NGC 1365

Hi Martin, I'm sorry about the confusion. The reason the displayed spectra isn't corrected is that the instrumental response curve I have stops just before Ha and if used then that emission line doesn't appear. I didn't realise this at the time and need to make a new one. To calculate the Balmer Dec...

Re: Supernova in NGC 1365

Terry, It is always comforting when different instruments, observers. locations and conditions give supporting results ;) Christian, I thought my urban imaging conditions were poor but when I see (top photo) the amount of street light you are subject to then I don't feel so bad ... and, also conside...

Re: Supernova in NGC 1365

Despite a very hazy sky, but with a high target, I managed to get 7x600s spectra of the NGC1365 SN last night (HJD 2456230.1018) with my 0.28m C11, Lhires+150 grating, 35um slit, Atik314L main camera and Lodestar (+PHD) autoguider. Although I didn't have the time to grab any photometry the SN is bri...

Re: Why no email notifications?

I'm not sure why but since I posted my last message I have started to receive email notifications :)

Why no email notifications?

I should know the answer to this, but I don't:
I'm subscribed to all the forums listed on the front index page, but not to any specific topics under each forum, but I don't receive any email notifications regarding new postings. What could be the reason?

Re: Nova Sco 2012

The weather, for astronomy purposes, has been pretty useless in southern Australia for weeks but on 12 June it was clear enough to take some spectra. While I usually only use a 2400 grating with my Lhires III I did have a 150 grating installed for another project , making it nearly well equivalent t...

Re: Nonradial pulsations of zeta Oph

Hi Ernst, Interesting paper, well done. I am a bit confused by the second sentence: "Whether this mechanism produced the disk around the star, is still the subject of specialized astronomical discussion". Do you mean that NPR is the cause of the disk, or that the NPR are produced IN the di...

Re: S Dor

Terry, As I see, from the header, that your spectra is not HC corrected I applied an approx value of 2.32 km/s (I don't have your exact coords) and, using the mirror image method, I find RV=+315 km/s (a shift of 6.9A). This is too high, as the published value is around 230-250 km/s, in line with the...

Re: S Dor

Terry, Good work! Even though the resolution is less that the PI (Noel Richardson) was hoping for I'm sure it will still be much appreciated ... especially if CTIO, like me, are clouded out. Based on earlier S Dor spectra I would have expected He lines 5876, 6678 and 5169 FeII to have been more prom...

Re: Fringing ripple

Hi Martin, Thank you for your comments and the link to the very interesting paper on fiber noise ... the idea of shaking the fiber cables during an exposure is certainly counter intuitive, but fascinating. According to the first graph the predicted S/N at around 4700A, where I'm working, is only aro...
