Re: VV Cep spectroscopy reference star ?
Peter, A reference star does not need good SNR... Here I would go back to the question for what purpose a reference star will be used, esp. one having a bad signal. And yes, you are right. The Alpy DSLR barlow lens decreases S/N, as spectra are oversampled in both wavelength and spatial resolution a...

VV Cep - certain open questions for discussion
Dear all, At the OHP I was able to get some nice spectra of VV Cep. Having an image at hand, probably helps to follow the discussion about spectral profiles of VV Cep, beta Lyr (shelyak), etc. So, I created a simple mount of certain raw stellar spectra, that I’ve taken at the OHP with my Vixen 8“ Ca...

Re: VV Cep spectroscopy reference star ?
Olivier, good question. Because nobody could provide an answer at OHP, I tried to find a acceptable answer by myself during observation at the OHP. My personal opinion: Reference stars to calibrate the instrument response should be bright enough. There are two reasons for choosing stars around 3rd m...

Re: Spectrum of nebula: data reduction question
Hi Olivier, I agree with the method to remove sky background. The size of the nebula on the slit may vary depending on the telescope and spectrograph you are using. Exposures to record bright skies will be very long to find. Larger than with conventional imaging. There are a few problems to properly...

Jupiter with Alpy - offtopic
Hello, these are first spectra recorded in the night of 6. June 2015 with Alpy 600 on a Vixen VC200L 8" Cassegrain and Canon EOS 40D DSLR, astro-modified and using Astronomik L-Filter. This is more a raw test of the Alpy 600 with self developed image processing and analysis tool set, than serio...

Re: Hello!
Hello Robin,
Its too long time to speak about "experience". Obviously, it helped to get the spectrograph fast enough to the telescope and working to obtain first spectra from bright stars. The modern technology helps a lot. Anyway, the rest of the astrophysics must be relearned.

Hello!
Hello forum, My name is Thilo Bauer. I'm interested in spectroscopy since years, but paused for many years. There is some earlier experience in spectroscopy. In 1992 working to create the REVRAVEL reversion radial velocity spectrograph at the Hoher List observatory (formerly part of the University o...
