Using the ALPY200

I thought I would start a thread for people using the Shelyak version of the ALPY 200. I have been using my version for 10 years now. You can see some information about it on my website http://www.threehillsobservatory.co.uk/astro/spectroscopy_20.htm and I talk about it in this workshop https://www....

Re: Traitement alpy 200

Accurate sky background subtraction is also very important for faint objects. Check the sky subtracted image that ISIS produces and turn up the brightness. The sky background near the spectrum should be just noise with no features.

Re: Traitement alpy 200

Other good tips using ISIS are to make the binning zone as narrow as possible and select optimised binning in the general tab. This helps to minimise the sky and camera noise.

Re: Traitement alpy 200

With ISIS it is also important to crop all the images before you process them so there is no large area of black. If you do not do this, the flat correction does not work correctly and you lose a lot of dynamic range which is very important on faint objects. ISIS has a good tool to do this easily is...

Re: Traitement alpy 200

I use ISIS with 4 Balmer lines with my ALPY200 (Ha alpha to delta). A good tip is to rectify the spectrum first to make the lines easier to measure. ISIS does something similar when using the standard ALPY600 and Balmer lines (Method 1) ttp://www.astrosurf.com/buil/isis/guide_alpy/resume_etalonnage....

An interesting very red spectrum. Total galactic IS extinction is 7.8 in V in that direction so probably very reddened. Image how bright it might have been without extinction !

Hi Emmanuael, Yes this is a type II. Claudio Balcon was able to classify it using an earlier spectrum during the break out phase when the Balmer and He lines were clearer. You can see the same effect in my animation of SN 2023ixf here https://britastro.org/observations/observation.php?id=20230528_14...

Re: New Alpy 200 spectrograph

As I expect many of you know I have been using my own version of this for ten years now so it is good news to see this is now commercially available. I developed it primarily for supernova confirmation and classification (In 2016, the first amateur to do this) but here is a quick example of what can...

AT2024bch - a possible bright supernova in NGC3206

Patrick Wiggins reports a possible supernova AT2024bch in NGC3206
https://www.wis-tns.org/object/2024bch
It is currently reported mag 15.5 but at this distance it could potentially reach mag 12 (if a type Ia with no extinction)
It is well place for northern hemisphere observers

Re: supernova SN 2023ixf in M101 !

Catching up with some more animations (I am still following it but at lower resolution with the ALPY200 now it is ~mag 16.5)
