Re: New transcient, perhaps a nova
James, I use the velocity plot feature of PlotSpectra and simply choose the listed Halpha or Hbeta as the center point on the chart settings dialog. I do correct for Heliocentric radial velocity when I process the spectra with ISIS but generally nothing more. PlotSpectra is available here: https://1...

Re: New transcient, perhaps a nova
Here is nova sct on the 10th captured with my echelle spectrograph at R = 12000. It is still brightening (V mag = 9.5 on AAVSO) but it is low in the sky and difficult to get good S/N at the blue end.. novasct2017_20170910_014_tlester_1.png novasct2017_20170910_014_tlester_2.png novasct2017_20170910_...

Re: R Aqr spectra requested by Margarita Korovska
My attempt at this star on Aug 10th. About as low as I can reach from my location (unless I cut the tops off some of our trees). I am pleased with the signal to noise I was able to get in spite of the poor seeing at this low altitude and the lower slit efficiency. raqr_20170810_246_tlester_1.png raq...

Re: New transcient, perhaps a nova
Aug 2 - Balmer lines have increased significantly!
Here are my spectra so far converted to aprox. flux using AAVSO data.

Re: New transcient, perhaps a nova
Was able to get spectra the last two nights (29th and 30th) with my new echelle. Halpha still dropping.
But not much change at Hbeta.

The nova has brightened significantly. Here is my result for July 26 with my new echelle.

Re: Stange results from ISIS
Christian, You are right about the sampling. I am slightly under sampled for some of the orders. To maximize S/N I designed for a sampling just over 2 for 2x2 binning and a 23 um slit but the actual line widths seam to be a bit better than the design goal. I should probably bin 1x1 for brighter obje...

Stange results from ISIS
HI all, This post is directed mainly to Christian. I have encountered some very strange behavior from ISIS when processing my echelle spectra. I have been working on this for quite some time to make sure I wasn't doing something silly. The problem I am about to describe occurs randomly and I can not...

Sorry for the delay in reply. On holiday and offline.
Here is a little screen animation that shows the measure operation. The calculate button is not made active until the continuum is defined. Use the left mouse button and click/drag to select regions.
