QR Vul

Post by Valerie Desnoux »

QR Vul has again shown an outburst this august, about 3 years after the previous one. It took about one year for the h-alpha emission line to disappear in the previous episode.

It is so highly recommended to take spectrum. It will allow professionals to characterize the disk evaporation.
There is a specific web page here for a summary of the observations stored in the BeSS database. http://astrosurf.com/vdesnoux/QRVul/QR%20Vul.html

Hello,

To which professionnal do we send our spectra?
Is there any professionnal astronomers referent PI for this survey?

Clear skies,

Benji,

QR Vul is a Be star and the best is to upload your spectra in BeSS database: http://basebe.obspm.fr/

From time to time, several professional astronomers take some spectra from the database to do a publication (see list of references as exemples).

Otherwise, Be star is a long term (about 10 years) monitoring and it is only after long period continuous observations that some statistics will be able to be drawn. Still, it is interesting to see that we have detected two outbursts of this star in about 3-4 years... did we miss some in between? Is it a almost periodic phenomenon for this star? Well, need more time and observation to conclude anything at this stage!

I met Coralie Neiner last week. Among other topics we briefly talked about QRVul. From only one star it is not possible to extract an astrophysical explanation. Few things can be said at that moment. It is interesting to note that the strenght of the emission of the second emission phase is similar to the first observed. Probably same phenomenon under it. Now it is up to us to monitor if the rate of dilution is the same and if a period exists.

Hello,

As seen in the ARASBeAm extract below, the outburst occured within couple of months. So the observing frequency currently set at 90days seems too low. Certainly should be increased at 30d or even 15d ? Of course, as soon as we do it... the next outburst will certainly wait ten years from now... :-)

I would also recommend some campaign during the observing season for this star, specially when it is a morning one when less observers are looking at it (ie: in the spring).
