Star BD+40 4353. Be star or K2III ??

Post by Massimiliano M »

Guys,
we would like to submit what we have observed in the last days.
During our usual activity of spectra recording, we observed the star BD+40 4353.
Here below the spectrum collected in 3 different nights and a reference spectrum taken from Visual Spec database.

As you can observe this is NOT a Be star at all! Apparently this is a K2III.
The star is in the BeSS list and officially it is a B2Ve but it doesn’t have any spectrum uploaded in the database.

We are trying to collect all the available existing literature about this star but it’s very poor and difficult to find.
Nothing useful on line. Our last chance it’s to collect some papers through the interlibrary service.

Any comment and suggestion are very welcome.

Hi Max, also Umberto Sollecchia observed BD+40 4353 with a low resolution slit spectroscope. Follows his spectrum compared to HD6497 (K2III):

Image

Both observed spectra seem to be K-class star profiles, not related to a B2V star also possibly reddened by interstellar dust (anyway Balmer dominated). Simbad magnitudes (B 10.54, V 9.46, J 7.456) suggest an orange-red continuum.

Wait for expert answers.

This is not the first suspected wrong classification found recently. BD+59 205 also does not appear to be correct for a Be star

There could be more to find as fainter Be stars are measured which do not have spectra in BeSS. Perhaps we need to start a list of suspected incorrect Be. (They could for example be typos in the catalogue which would mean there are other stars which should be in BeSS in their place.
