Jupiter spectroscopy: polar arc observation

Postby Christian Buil » Sat Oct 15, 2011 6:47 pm

An observation of a specific feature of Jupiter, polar arcs visible is the infrared CH4 (methane) band :

Image

I use a C11 and a LISA spectrograph configured for infrared observation.

Jupiter is very dark in the CH4 band and the faint polar structure is visible by contrast at this wavelength.

You can display a full resolution of the document here:

Hi Christian,

Is it an optical illusion or is the imaging camera at an angle?

Robin,

LISA exists in two versions. In near Infra Red mode, the acquisition CCD camera is tilted for niminal resolution.

Cordialement,

Christian,
