Halpha-V/R Period Analysis of the Binary pi Aqr

Post by Ernst Pollmann »

Perhaps this is in oblivion:

The V/R measurements in Halpha spectra of the binary star pi Aqr since October 2004 until today, makes possible together with the available spectra of the data base BeSS and other colleagues from the ARAS-group an analysis of a possible periodic behavior [used program: AVE].

The upper plot shows the V/R time behaviour in eight visibility phases, the middle plot shows in the power spectrum a dominant frequency with a period of 83.8 d, and the lower plot shows the phase diagram with the ephemerides: JD 2453280.0 + 83.8 * T

This period lies suspiciously near the orbital binary period of 84.1 d (The Astrophysical Journal, 573, 824, 2002 July10; K. Bjorkman et al.: „A study of pi Aqr during a quasi-normally star phase“). Thomas Rivinius (ESO) confirms these data in his spectra from „almost without emission phase“ (privat communication). A cause for the found periodicity is the „traveling emission component“, as it was found and examined in the mentioned paper in the B-phase of the star.

Since pi Aqr at present is still well visible, it would be desirably, if potential observers could dedicate themselves to this star !!
