New ESP spectrograph R=30000
In english below :
English version :
Here's the first light of my new spectrograph : ESP ( for Eshel Plus)
The first spectrum taken last night on Zet Tau, a Be star with just 3 exposures of 300s each.
Some features of this new spectrograph :
- Resolution: R=30000
- wavelength : from about 3950 to 7800 A (more than 40 orders )
- Weight: 81 kg
- Length: 2.10m
The calibration module and the injection fiber module are the same as that use for the eShel spectrograph.
Many thanks to François Cochard for the development of this new spectrograph and his help for the settings.
The first spectrum appear on the screen after 300s of exposure.

Hello Olivier,

Bravo Olivier !! :
Félicitations, par la construction del ESP. Ce fut un grand effort.
Les résultats sont impressionnants.
Amicalement, Joan.

Wow Olivier...that is fantastic! Congratulations to you and François.
Now you need a larger wine refrigerator for thermal stabilization (I remember the small one you used for eShel)! Joking apart, we're looking forward to see some great hi-res spectroscopy!

Yes, but with this new spectrograph, I need a cold room
I'm waiting for a good weather to take some spectra with this new ESP.

Re: New ESP spectrograph R=30000
some result with the ESP :
Castor : with 4 Balmer lines (up to H Delta and maybe more in the futur)
Alcyone : the first ESP spectrum in Bess database
H Alpha (order 52)
H Beta (order 70)
H gamma (order 79)
Atmospherics lines on order 50
And comparaison between eShel (R=11000) in blue and ESP spectrograph (R=30000) in red
(not corrected from heliocentrique velocity)

Re: New ESP spectrograph R=30000
(in english below)

Comparing Spectros SOPHIE ( at OHP on the 1m93 telescope who discover the first exo-planet) and ESP on my 400mm telescope .
I just superimposed the two spectra with a normalisation on the same region.
Although exposures are not the same and neither resolution ( for SOPHIE R= 40000 instead of R=30000 for ESP) but this comparison already validates the processing with software of the spectrum and the instrumental response but no correction of the heliocentric velocity has been made (the telluric lines are aligned on the 2 spectra)

Re: New ESP spectrograph R=30000
Hi Olivier,
Very nice. You start to reach what I call moderate spectroscopic resolution Not so bad !
But for cosmologists, this is extremely high resolution.
Note that the SOPHIE spectrum I took a couple of years ago was in the high-resolution mode, hence R=75k. Do you also have the HARPS-N one, with R=110k ? It would be great to do the comparison with that one too.
cheers,
Alex
