I use the virtual slit in PHD2. You don’t need to position it during the day. If you aim at a bright star and defocus so that there is a big donut on the image, the slip becomes obvious and it is easy to position the slit marker in the correct spot.
When you then refocus and put your target on the slit, the star should mostly disappear or at least have a big gap in the middle of it.
