Some MILES stars missing in ISIS ?

Post by Robin Leadbeater »

I keep finding the MILES star spectrum I need is not in my ISIS database. I am wondering if my database is corrupted. Could someone check if HD109307 is in their database for example please ?

Thanks

Hi Robin,

That star is missing in my ISIS database. There are lots of MILES stars which are not included. In Paulo Berardi's spreadsheet these missing MILES stars are marked with a *. It would be good to know why they are not included in ISIS as I've often found the star I wanted to use as a reference was marked in the spreadsheet with a * effectively meaning I couldn't use it.

Thanks David,

I cannot see an obvious reason why HD109307 would be suspect. It is low extinction and a good fit to an A4v Pickles spectrum. An ALPY spectrum of it last night shows no obvious problems either

Cheers

Hi David and Robin,

I have also puzzled on this issue. At first I thought I needed to download a newer version of the database from the ISIS web site.

http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/isis-software.html

So I did and I counted the number of Miles stars, those beginning with a “m_” and I counted 584 entries. I got the same count for my currently installed isis database.

So I went to the Miles website.

http://www.iac.es/proyecto/miles/

which does list HD109307in the MILES stellar catalog on page 24 as one of nearly 1000 MILES entries.
http://www.iac.es/proyecto/miles/pages/ ... alogue.php

I actually downloaded the entire catalog to my hard disk with the idea that I would be able to add “missing” MILES star to the ISIS database. One problem is that the downloaded files are named sequentially starting at s0001.fits to s0985.fits. You can open the files and for example, I opened s0445.fits and when it loads into PlotSpectra it shows the star name HD109871. So obviously the star name is in the fits header even though the file names gives no clue.

I finally found that the file s0922.fits contains the MILES profile for HD109307…. However when you open the file s0922.fits in PlotSpectra the fits header has the file named as MEL11_183. This happens (substituting a “_” for a space character) to be another name for the star HD109307 as shown in Simbad.

http://simbad.u-strasbg.fr/simbad/sim-i ... =submit+id

So I renamed s0922.fits to m_HD109307.fit and placed a copy in my installed isis database folder. I clicked on the Response button but did not see it when I scrolled the list of Miles reference stars. So I used the old Windows trick (restarted ISIS in this case) but still did not see HD109307 show up.

I took a different approach and navigated to page 24/50 on the MILES site

http://www.iac.es/proyecto/miles/pages/ ... .php?pn=24

where you see the entry for HD109307. Note it has a small letter (c) next to the name which then legend indicates means a member of a Cluster. It may be that the stars we do not see in ISIS are impacted by this classification. I have not had time to test out that theory. As a side note, you can click on the green down arrow to the right of the Name field on this page to download the individual fits file s0922.fits.

I did edit the fits header for the renamed s0922.fits to HD109307 to change the OBJNAME field from MEL11_183 to HD109307 and restarted ISIS but this still did not help.

So, like you, I do not know how to add a Miles reference star to the ISIS database. There could be a good reason that is beyond my pay grade but in this case Robin’s Alpy image of HD109307 looks good.

Cheers!

Dear Forrest.

I was also interested in adding MILES stars into ISIS Database. I succeed in adding HD109307.

isis_HD109307_red.png
isis_HD109307_red.png (66.05 KiB) Viewed 16170 times
Here is the procedure.
1- download the file corresponding to HD109307 from MILES database and place it into your ISIS database directory (isis_5_9_3\isis_database_v7).

2- rename file s0922.fits into m_HD109307.fit. Be carefull of the file extension. It must be ".FIT" and not ".FITS".

3- update file miles.lst or miles2.lst to add the informations that will be used by ISIS to add the Fit file in the database. Each file contains the list of star appearing in the two dropdown list in ISIS database window. Both file contains the same type of information. So, I think updating any of them should be fine. In my case, I updated miles.lst.
The informations to add in miles.lst are:
"name of the star" "Right Ascension" "Declination" "Spectral type of the star" "Magnitude"

Example:
HD109307 12 33 34.21921 +24 16 58.7429 A4Vm 6.243

I have taken all these informations from SIMBAD. For the magnitude I do not know if the value is used by ISIS in its calculation. In my case, I have chosen the value on SIMBAD for V Filter.

4- close ISIS if it is opened and open it to have the new star included in the Database.

This is clearly a painfull job if one wants to add a large number of stars.
I wonder if it is worth adding as more stars as possible in ISIS, or do we only need a few number (few compared to the 985 stars in MILES DB) of them?

Best reagrds,
Ibrahima.

Hi all, a quick word.

The MILES ISIS database is currently limited to objects brighter than magnitude 7. This is an initial arbitrary choice (for me, it is easier to calibrate the instrumental response with bright stars !).

But I admit that it is possible under certain circumstances to have a database extended to weaker objects. I suggest you wait. I produced ISIS_DATA5 with almost all the MILES spectra (889 entries). I am also using the latest version of MILES (V9.1) with in particular a much improved wavelength calibration of the spectra.

ISIS_DATA5 should be available tomorrow, and I'll let you know.

Thanks Christian !

When you have the time it would also be nice to have a feature to load any reference spectrum direct from a file instead of having to add it to the database :D

Also a reminder about 2 MILES spectra which are suspect

HD216916 HD213307

http://www.spectro-aras.com/forum/viewt ... f=8&t=2107

Perhaps they are corrected in MILES V9.1 ?

Hi all

Form the page: http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/isis-software.html

you can now download updated ISIS data base (download the file ISIS_database_v8.zip and decompress).

Hello Christian,

Do you have a link to your source for the as observed (not IS extinction corrected) MILES 9.1 spectra ?
Francois Teyssier's original link
http://www.star.uclan.ac.uk/~psb/webpag ... its.tar.gz
no longer works

Thanks
