On Semiconductor CCD sensors

Post by Ken Hudson »

On Semiconductor is discontinuing production of all CCD sensors. This will impact Atik cameras and QSI cameras at least.

Please see https://www.atik-cameras.com/news/on-semi-announcement/ for more information from Atik.

This is very bad news.

Thanks, Ken

This is the key reason for my interest in CMOS sensors.

On some aspects (pixel size in particular) there is no equivalent CCD capacity in CMOS. But some performances are more better for CMOS (readout noise...).
The transitional period will be difficult for many amateurs and for the spectrography domain before CMOS offer becomes wider. But right now I'm observing exclusively with CMOS.

Note this only affects the cameras with "Kodak" sensors. Sony will continue CCD manufacture up to 2026 so the popular spectroscopy cameras with Sony CCD like the ATK 428, 460, 414 and the SX equivalents should theoretically still be available for some years yet (As Steve Chambers says in the video.) There is a risk though that as imagers move to CMOS, as they are already doing due to the low cost for large sensors, demand for CCD cameras drop off to the point that they are discontinued, even though the sensors are still available.

Cheers
