VHIRES / MEDRES

Post by Christian Buil »

Some view of definitive version of VHIRES (R = 45000 - large echelle grating) and MEDRES (here a 80 x 80 mm 300 l/mm grating working at order #1)
Instant change from the version (thanks to optical bench). Rigid setup for high precision radial velocities measure. The refractor is a FSQ85ED astrograph
(apochromatic), working here in autocoillimation mode.

Some recent spectra of ultraviolet part taken by using MEDRES mode (ideal for teach
spectral classification):

I admire people who can confidently balance a 6000 Euro grating on a couple of spare counterweights on a messy work area desk. :-)

Seriously though - very interesting work.

Add of a cross-disperser to VHIRES for take enlarged spectral domain (ideal a 7 deg. prism, used in double-pass) :

Typical result. A ThAr spectrum:

and a documented 2D solar spectrum:

The spectral domain for each order is only 40 A (in the red). But it is extended by a factor 20
relative to a pass-band filter selector. R = 45000 of course. It is a potential exoplanet killer... ;)

Mode details here:

Now some tests on stellar target. Note the capacity to capture Halpha line and HeI 5876 A lines on a same frame. Important for many astrophysical studies (Be stars, RR Lyrae wave, ...) :

The measured effective resolution is R = 50000 (compare with ELODIE (OHP – R = 45000 – the 51 Peg exoplanet discover) :

What about the magnitude limit with the VHIRES @ R=50000 and your optic ?
