T Tauri observations

Post by Christian Buil »

Here an observation of T Tauri star (see request for observations : http://www.spectro-aras.com/forum/viewt ... f=5&t=1033
taken in high resolution mode the 21 Dec 2014 with a 28 cm Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and the VHIRES-MO (R = 50000) spectrograph
(see http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/vhires/demo3.htm).

Halpha profile:

Observed oxygen line at 6300 A (OI airglow ?):

Part of the 2D spectrum (50 minutes exposure on this 9.3 mag. star):

Medium and... high resolution are possible on this target. Observation are welcome during Chandra run.

A MEDRES spectrum of T Tauri the 21/12/2013 (same date as VHIRES spectrum) - C11 + Fiber link and 300 l/mm grating spectrograph - R = 1800,
exposure 3 x 600 seconds):

A very strong atmospheric turbulence lowered dramatically efficiency here (star FWHM is ~15 arcsec, a small percentage of starlight enters the slit), so I'm using 600 l/mm grating instead of 1200 one.

I started a sequence with:

9.25 inch SC telescope
Lhires III
600 l/mm grating
31 microns slit
SXVR-H694 CCD camera
Exposure time 480s

Typical single exposure spectrum:

I don't know if they can be useful...

Paolo

PS: many clouds in the sky. I hope to take a sufficient number of spectra

Seeing improved after some frames, so I managed to take a continuous sequence from 18:58 1 jan UT to 00:03 2 jan UT with 36 spectra (R~2200) at 480s resolution.

Animation shows little line modifications but I would share profiles in FITS format for any analysis (where we can store them?).

Image

Might be interesting an initial spectrum (R~6000) taken at 17:33 UT before changing the grating that shows an asimmetric h-alpha line (a possibile detached component on red side?). Consider a very low SNR and a strong turbulence for this profile. No asymmetry was visible in the spectrum taken on December 21 with the same setup.

Hi Paolo,

No sign of asymmetry in my R~5500 spectra from 29, 30th
http://www.spectro-aras.com/forum/downl ... hp?id=1980
but there is a hint of it perhaps in Christian's VHIRES spectrum from 21st ?

Conditions were bad here last night with high winds and mostly rain so no spectra. Tonight looks a little better perhaps

Thank you Robin. May be a temporary event? I wonder if other european spectroscopists observed T Tau in the same moment. Tonight, weather permitting, I come back to the 1200 l/mm grating. I hope weather is good also for you!

Yesterday I managed to observe T Tau with Lhires III 1200 continuously from 17:18 to 20:00 UT. After that clouds covered the sky.

The asymmetry was visible again and, during the sequence, some modifications concerned the top of H-alpha emission line. Also Nico Montigiani show me profiles he took on 1st Jan with a similar feature.

The H-alpha line evolution (10 mins resolution):

I'd like to point out that some T Tau spectra were taken also by A.A.F. members (Amateur Astronomers Association in Florence) and, at low resolution, by U. Sollecchia (L'Aquila).

Hi Paolo,

Those are really nice, particularly with the bright moon so close. I had difficulties getting PHD to stay locked on the star because of the bright background and then it clouded up so I only got ~1 min of starlight in a single 5 min exposure last night at 18:01 UT
The SNR is only 5 in the continuum  but it does at least seem to confirm the asymmetry you saw.

Hi to everybody.
As per Paolo message here below our spectra taken few days ago.
Hoping they can be useful.

To all:

This is the first time I observe the T Tauri, who I should send the FITS?

Thanks J.Guarro
