Here is a spectrum of the outburst taken tonight, 9th August, with a LISA. Very sharply peaked H-alpha line with FWZI of about 7000 km/s. Other Balmer lines similarly broad. I don't remember seeing a spectrum quite like this before!

Hier soir premiers spectres dans un ciel brumeux de Rs Oph region 3500A avec UVEX(4) .
Traitement complet CMED avec étoile de réf.
Le réseau 600tr/mm n'est pas optimisé pour l'UV (750nm ! )

Hi all,
my contribution with some profiles, from H-alpha to NIR regions. Some clouds in the sky.
Interesting, the O I 8446 emission line exhibits both components too, wide and narrow.

Salut Pierre,
Qu'utilises-tu comme télescope ?
Sur un graphique, il est indiqué RC8, et sur l'autre SC8.
C'est un vrai problème de trouver un tube dont les optiques traitées ne mangent pas tout le flux en dessous de 400 nm.

Bien vu, le "spectre couleurs" qui génère en Python l'entête donne bien le bon télescope qui est bien un RC8 de mon poste fixe, mais j'ai aussi fait avec SC8 la semaine dernier en nomade .
L'entête du spectre N&B est renseigné manuellement !
Je râle un peu car le réseau était fait pour l'IR. Je dois commander un 600tr pour UV pour avoir toute la chaine qui va bien .
Ce soir ciel blanc donc pas de spectre, surtout que demain journée publique Sol'Ex à Valberg.

The two main guidelines
to understand the formation of Balmer lines:
1. It is a recurrent nova,thus the white dwarf is massive, near Chandrasekar limit: a faint amount of accreted matter is sufficient to produce a nova outburst and the velocity of the ejecta is very high (not far from a SN!): this is the main broad component of HI lines.
2. The nova event appears in a symbiotic system with a high density nebula produced by the wind of the red giant (velocity of ~ few 10 km/s). The nebula, partially ionized in "quiescent" state, is strongly ionized by the nova phenomenon and recombines: this forms the narrow component.

The spectrum of RS Oph has dropped in flux by almost a half in the last 24 hrs as it starts to fade. The shape of the Balmer lines has subtly changed.
