VV Cep near-UV (UVEX spectrum)

First light of my UVEX spectrograph prototype
(UltraViolet EXplorer spectrograph - Czerny-Turner configuration,
R = 1500, here on a Newton 200 /f5 telescope - no guiding system for the moment,
exposure time limited to 30-60 seconds max.)
One of the target is VV Cep, but under very bad conditions (short exposure
time, many clouds...). Here the full spectral range (3350 A is the
low limit adopted for the moment):

(a UV special spectrum of the famous Be star gamma Cas - signal can be detected down
to 3200-3250 A).

3200 Angstrom - Wow!
Is this with the ATIK 460ex (ICX694 CCD) ?

Yes the camera is an Atik460EX. The UV sensitivity of the CCD is excellent for the cost.
The peak sensitivity of the actual system is at 4800 A wavelength.
The overall efficiency (atmosphere, telescope optic, spectrograph optic (nearly all
reflective), detector) is of course very low in the UV part: 0.16% at 3200 A (relative to
4800 A response), 0.80% at 3300 A, 1.9% at 3400 A.
On intense UV source (hot stars,..) a signal seem to be detected
down to 3200 A (gamma Cas spectrum), it is the surprise of
the actual observation.
The future concern optimization of grating blaze
(selection of a better adapted UV component). And also, expose more
then 1 min per elementary frame !

Also interested how the resolution will change by putting there a slit.

Jolie projet et bons résultats.
Ce spectro peut il s'utiliser pour les objets de faibles magnitudes (galaxie de seyfert, quasars) ?

Etienne,
On peut je pense observer des objets relativement faibles, genre V=9 à 11 dans le proche UV en posant longtemps
(disons une bonne heure), mais en revanche ce n'est pas du tout fait pour de l'extragalactique à cause du
faible rendement du détecteur dans cette partie du spectre (tout dépend de la partie ultraviolette considérée, mais vers
3400 A le rendement global doit être inférieur 1%).
En revanche, j'attend avec impatience la prochaine comète brillante car il y a des choses à faire
dans l'UV avec ces objets, entre-autre. Idem sur les novae.

Christian,
L'année prochaine, il faudra surveiller la comète 41 P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresak.
Elle est connue pour ses sursauts spectaculaires lors de ses passages au périhélie : deux sursauts de 10 magnitudes en 1973, un autre outburst en 2001.
En mars-avril 2017, elle passera à 0,14 AU de la Terre et sera bien placée dans le ciel pour l'hémisphère nord. Nicolas Biver pense qu'elle pourrait être visible à l'oeil nu.
