Viewing additional CALSPEC data in ISIS

Has anyone successfully viewed additional CALSPEC profiles (available from
http://www.stsci.edu/hst/observatory/crds/calspec.html) in ISIS?
I'm receiving the "not a valid 1D FITS file" message when I've tried to load a couple of examples.

The .fits file from CALSPEC will open in Vspec and you can save as a .dat. You might want to crop the wavelength range in the .dat file. ISIS will then open the .dat file.
Cheers,
David

Thanks David,
Still no luck I'm afraid. I'm trying to load HD160617 from here:
ftp://ftp.stsci.edu/cdbs/current_calspec

Paul,
Just tried to download the .fits file and got the error message that it wasn't a valid 1D fits file.......

Paul,
It seems there are different formats of .fits files in that directory. The files with filenames under the column headed STIS in the directory
http://www.stsci.edu/hst/observatory/crds/calspec.html won't open with the process I suggested. However those under FOS and IUE seem to open successfully.
There are several CALSPEC star spectra in the database which downloads with ISIS. These begin c_.
Cheers,
David

In trying out IRAF I came across several issues with FIT files created by pro-software and "amateur" software. These included issues with date formats and the wide variety of allowed FIT formats the pros use.
I found tools on this site that let me look at the files
https://fits.gsfc.nasa.gov/ and then I had to develop utilities using Python and the astropy.io.fits package.
I found the simplest way to get the relevant packages was to install anaconda from continuum analytics
https://www.continuum.io/downloads.

Hi Andrew,
I have Anaconda installed and have run IRAF in the past, but was hoping to avoid turning this into a half day project
Sadly, most of the ISIS CALSPEC spectra are northern hemisphere centric, so I may well have to look at some alternative utilities.
Thanks for your input though,
Paul

A fix in the unlikely event that anyone is following this thread:
- Download and install Specview from
http://www.stsci.edu/institute/software ... s_specview.
- Open the STIS CALSPEC or other troublesome FITs file.
- Save as a text file, edit, rename to .DAT, open in ISIS. Crop, save, etc.
Thanks to John S (via the BAA) and David Boyd for tips.
