CN bands of comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner

Postby Christian Buil » Sat Sep 15, 2018 3:34 pm

Near-UV CN bands of 21P at resolution of R=4000 for detail some feature of this complex structure (of course, the multi-lines constitution of CN molecular bands is not here fully resolved). Lhires III + 1800l/mm grating and 35 microns slit - arrival of cirrus cloud limit the projected total exposure time :-(

For comparison, 21P taken with the 60-cm telescope of Pic du Midi and UVEX2 (at R=650). High SNR but inferior CN bands resolution:

RE:"1800 t/mm et d'une fente de 35 microns " This is my exact LhiresIII configuration.

Christian, on that monitor are you guiding x-motion(RA) horizontal and y-motion(dec) vertical with the slit vertical?
With my AP1200 I guide with the slit horizontal and the x-motion(RA) and y-motion(Dec). Does this improve
spectral resolution?

Nice discussion about the CN lines if the near UV......I have to wait till i'm at Pinos next month to do this on a comet
as my sky is very light polluted next to downtown Los Angeles (county population nearly 12 million!)
