Observation checklist

Does anyone use a checklist for spectroscopic observations? Occasionally I make mistakes or miss something, wasting the rest of an observation session.

I have seen Forrest Sims' spectroscopic observation worksheet. But I'm thinking more of a quick-action checklist to go through as the observation session proceeds.

Anyone?

Hi Hamish!!

I made mine adapting the Mt. Stony Brook DADOS Spectrograph Operations Manual...
http://www.astro.sunysb.edu/metchev/PHY ... ctions.pdf

I hope it can help you.

thanks Nacho.

That is a well written guide for users of your facility. I was thinking more in terms of a quick reference checklist/flow chart card to keep handy when making a set of observations. I will draw something up and post here.

There is an example check list in Chapter 15 of "Successfully Starting in Astronomical Spectroscopy by Francois Cochard"

Overall this is an excellent very practical detailed guide to recording and processing spectra suitable for absolute beginners up. Shelyak should probably include a copy with each spectrograph :-)

Cheers
