Some spectrograph reference material

Post by Andrew Smith »

While searching for information on spectrographs throughput and atmospheric extinction etc. to improve my understanding I came across some material here http://astronomy.nmsu.edu/cwc/Teaching/ ... /Lectures/ which in the files astro spec.pdf and spectra.pdf as well as some of the others give the most thorough treatment I have come across. While much will be repeating what is already available e.g. on Christians site, I have not seen such a comprehensive approach before. In particular the inclusion of the Instrument profile (i.e. blurring of the spectra due to the resolution of the spectrograph) with all the other elements such as the blaze function.

They are by Chris Churchill from New Mexico State University http://astronomy.nmsu.edu/cwc/ and it look like he is writing a book but it seems not to be available yet. I have messaged him to see if and when it might be published.

A must for nerds on light summer evening!

Regards Andrew
