Now, in year 2014, the same star observed at R = 50000 with a VHIRES-MO spectrograph and a C11 telescope. The initial sequence data:



A complex spectrum (double lined spectroscopic binary with a 2.8 days period).

After some processing, the starspot on the K1 primary of the system is now detect:



... see periodic bumps in the Fe I near 6065 A and compare with Vogt and Penrod original work

(the final disk image can be constructed by modeling the observed spectral lines shape, coming soon, but some mathematic
is necessary for an automatic inversion processing task, help is welcome).

Resolve detail on the surface of a star with a spectrograph is an old dream for me. One of the most fascinating applications of spectroscopy!

Le passage au 3D c’est le truc qui me manque effectivement. A vrai dire c’est à la fois simple et compliqué.

Il y a la technique empirique. On positionne un peu au hasard une tache sur un disque (synthétique) et on fait
tourner l’étoile. Pour chaque angle de rotation, on intègre le champ de vitesses radiales sur le demi-disque
présentement visible. On tient compte au besoin de la présence de la tache si elle est visible, en pondérant
avec son intensité.

On construit ainsi un profil de raie pour un angle de rotation donné (un angle de phase). On procède
ainsi avec plusieurs angles. Si les profils synthétiques collent avec l’observation, on a gagné, on a trouvé
la solution. Sinon on recommence avec une autre forme de tache, une autre position en latitude. Ça peut être long.

Le problème est qu’il peut y a avoir pas mal de degrés de liberté, comme la noirceur des taches, l’inclinaison
de l’axe. Un cas « marrant » est celui d’une étoile dont l’équateur est vu par la tranche. La vitesse radiale est
maximale, mais il y a une ambiguïté : on ne sait pas si les taches sont dans l’hémisphère nord ou l’hémisphère sud.
Voyez le genre…

C’est un jeu amusant. Il faut disposer en premier d’un petit modèle qui synthétique le profil Doppler
rotationnel d’une raie. Des pros (et amateurs) doivent avoir cela. Je suis demandeur.

Il existe des solutions d’inversion par itération (max de vraisemblance …), moins empirique. C’est là qu’il faut faire de bonnes math.
Ici encore du code doit exister, mais on entre dans du grand savoir-faire, pas toujours public, je pense.

L’enjeu est important. Il donne ainsi accès aux techniques de tomographie stellaire (cartographie 3D d’un nuage
de gaz tournant autour d’une étoile, …). Je crois que certains pros sont reluctant devant ces méthodes, car les
reconstructions 3D peuvent parfois être discutables. C’est un sujet tout de même passionnant.

Looking at the references citing Vogts quite old paper you may find some newer methods for solving your problem, which is quite tough considering noise and influence of temperature profile, variability etc. etc.
