Re: Nova Sgr = PNV J18365700-2855420
Here is a 3 hr spectrum from 19-3-2015, of the region 6800-7160, as requested by Steve Shore. _novasgr_20150319_664_JPowles.png The OI line at 7003 and the CI line complex at 7115 are clearly visible, although the 7003 line is obscured by the heavy telluric lines. I've had a go at removing them, usi...

Re: Nova Sgr = PNV J18365700-2855420
Here is a low-resolution spectrum from 18-3, and a comparison of the central section of the low-res spectra from 18-3 and 16-3. Interesting to observe the deepening of the P Cyg profiles and the reduction in expansion velocity over those two days.

Here is the high-resolution data. 2 hrs data on the region 4770-5190, showing the H Beta and several of the iron lines. JD 2457098.2097
Ejecta velocity c.1100 km/s in this spectrum.

Nova Sgr = PNV J18365700-2855420
Hi all, I have taken a low-resolution (R=260, 150 l/mm) spectrum of this. The spectrum appears to be that of a Fe II nova shortly after maximum. Prominent lines of Fe II are already showing at 4924-5018-5169 and 4491-4629. Strong P-Cygni profiles evident; at this low resolution the ejecta velocity a...

Possible nova in Oph PNV J17144255-2943481
Here's the CBAT page http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/unconf/followups/J17144255-2943481.html - this nova was discovered a couple of days ago. I got a low-res SA100 spectrum last night. Strong blue continuum. Odd sort of line profile - weak Ha emission line, no sign of Hb, but a stronger He/N(?) emis...

Recurrent nova V745 Sco in outburst
Here is a spectrum of V745 Sco 10x180s with the Star Analyser 100 in the convergent beam of a 254mm SCT with focal reducer f/6.3, captured with an Atik 383 L+. Recurrent nova V745 Sco was reported as having erupted on 6 Feb. Last outburst was 1989. 8 feb.jpg I've identified the lines with best guess...

Re: V1369 Cen
Hey Malc, that Python script is really excellent. Allows the evolution to be shown better than any format I've seen so far.

Re: V1369 Cen
Malc, Robin, Tasso, There seem to be two explanations - or two possible causes - as to why we see an increasingly blue-shifted set of absorption lines in this phase of nova evolution. One (the simpler to understand, at least by me!) is advocated by Bob Williams (see Williams and Mason, 2009, Nova ej...

Hello from Canberra
Hi all,
I'm jonathan Powles from Canberra. I've been doing a lot of low-refs stuff with my SA100, especially on nova Cen 2013, and am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my L200, due any day now.
Like Malcolm from NZ, I'm a member of Variable Stars South.
Cheers
