Re: VV Cep evolution at low resolution
The British Astronomical Association has published in the August Journal my refereed paper on the spectroscopic evolution of the 2017 - 2019 eclipse of the red supergiant VV Cephei https://britastro.org/journal-full/26122 The BAA does a lot to encourage and support amateur spectroscopy, with mentor ...

Nova Cas 2021 remarkable spectral evolution
Since Mar 22 I've captured a dozen Alpy spectra of this beautiful nova, the latest last night May 30. The slow decline in expansion velocity seemed to go into reverse in my spectrum of May 24 around the time that the nova began again to rebrighten. The decline in velocity has seemingly resumed based...

Nova Cas 2021 now around mag 5.3!
My Alpy spectrum from yesterday evening. I think the CaII pair in the violet is particularly striking. Really a wonderful nova to observe.

Re: Alert! Nova Cas 2021 mag 9
Inspired by Christophe's wonderful composites, I created an animation of the Alpy 600 spectra that I have captured up until May 2. The spectra have been flux calibrated using the Vmag data from the AAVSO database: Nova Cas 2021 Vmag evolution to 2021 May 2 from AAVSO database.png Here is the animati...

Re: Alert! Nova Cas 2021 mag 9
Alpy 600 spectrum from this evening 2021.05.02. The FeII lines continue to strengthen and the P Cygni profile on the H alpha emission has now disappeared at the Alpy resolution:

Nova Cas 2021 Alpy spectrum evening of 2021 Apr 11
Here is my latest Alpy spectrum of Nova Cas 2021 at 23deg above my northern horizon. Continued Balmer and HeI emission all with strong P Cygni profiles, such a stable nova!

Observing Cepheid variable stars in an Alpy 600 spectroscope
As well as ad hoc targets I also like to have a longer term spectroscopy project on the go. I recently finished a period of work observing Cepheid variable stars. I reported the work in the BAA Variable Star Section Circular https://britastro.org/vss/VSSC186.pdf Classical Cepheid variable stars are ...
