Re: Nu Gem at Low Resolution
Hi Paolo & Robin, Thanks very much for all your help. This has been immensely useful to me and will enable me to improve my response calibrations. Paolo, those are great graphs from ISIS. They have given me a much better understanding of the effect of changing altitude and how to be careful in m...

Re: Nu Gem at Low Resolution
Hi Paolo, Thanks for all the trouble you've gone to in investigating this. I've downloaded a copy of your fits file so I can use it in comparisons. That is some very useful information and tips you have given me. Nu Gem is now getting too low for me to get decent data from my latitude (latitude 51 d...

Re: Nu Gem at Low Resolution
Hi Paolo, Thanks for your reply which contains useful and interesting information. I think you are right about cropping the spectrum at 4100-4200A. I am using an SXVR-H694 and so I get quite a wide spectral coverage, but it does mean the entire spectrum will not be in focus. I've since thought of a ...

Re: Nu Gem at Low Resolution
Robin & Peter, Thanks for your useful pointers. It does feel like an instrumental or atmospheric effect that I am not taking into account. Dispersion from the telescope optics or the atmosphere sound likely candidates. Although it also occurred to me whether this is because I am using the LHIRES...

Re: Nu Gem at Low Resolution
Hi Robin, Thanks for the pointers. I've compared my spectrum with Francois Cochard and mine definitely is growing too steeply to shorter wavelengths. My guess this is something up with my response curve. I've tried a few things without any significant improvement thus far. I have noticed that my wav...

Re: Nu Gem at Low Resolution
Hi Robin, Thanks for the feedback. The offset was down to me. I shifted the vertical axes of the spectra to avoid any overlap. Normally I remove the y-axis scale but forgot to this time. It could be that my instrument/atmospheric response correction is a little off. This was my first attempt at low ...

Nu Gem at Low Resolution
Hi, I've revisited Nu Gem but this time at low resolution using the 150 l/mm grating. I think I've done the corrections for instrument response and atmospheric extinction correctly by using the A2V star 26 Gem. I also flat fielded all the spectra. I'd be interested in any comments good or bad, espec...

Re: Hello from Somerset
Hi Andrew, Thanks for the information on your setup. That is a nice set of equipment with good pointing accuracy. I have to star hop around and even then I rarely get the target star in my field of view after a short slew. My field of view is about 7.6 x 6 arc min. I actually have TPoint but even us...

Hello from Somerset
Hi, I am Andy from Somerset in England. I've been interested in spectroscopy for many years, since studying astronomy at university in the early 1990's. However, I only started making spectroscopic observations last year. I have an L200 and an LHIRESIII spectroscopes. The telescope I use for imaging...

Re: Comet Lovejoy C/2014 Q2
Hi Hugh,
Strange coincidence, I thought I'd make my first post to this forum today as well!
That is a really nice spectrum of Lovejoy.
See you around,
Andy
