Parameters for a close binary system

Radial velocity measurements on a close binary system with young stars, with spectroscopic observations mostly from a professional observatory but supplemented with some data from my Lhires (when we didn't quite get the curve coverage we needed from our time allocation on the big telescope). This project is leading to some further binary star work with both professional and Lhires data.

The high degree of rotational broadening of the lines in these objects means that for practical purposes resolutions of much more than about R=10,000 or so don't add very much precision to RV measurements. Nobody really gets to precision of better than about 5km/s on these systems, so there's good scope for studies with typical amateur equipment. Though of course there are more unobserved bright systems on this side of the sky than there are in the Northern Hemisphere...

Interesting to see Visual Spec software being used in the analysis.

We used it for some of the blended line fits. The person I am working with had previously used IRAF for this, but once I introduced him to VSpec he decided that it was easier to use for some things.

Great work Tom

those lonely nights up at the observatory have paid dividends.

I look forward to reading this closely (and repeatedly to help it go in).
