Hi Paul/Keith
If its still of any interest this is a 120sec shot of a Relco starter bulb positioned at the objective end of my 120mm apo refractor. Isis seems to be fine using it for calibration.

That's pretty much what I see too Steve (though my lamp is not positioned at the objective end). As Peter intimates though, there's not much at the blue end - and I'm curious to know if there's been much shared with respect to calibration lines since the Aply's release some years ago. I attempted to reconcile some of the smaller peaks at the blue end with on-line sources without much success - though despite that I'm now getting excellent correlation of the Balmer lines with published spectra using just 5 lines.

Hi Paul
I don`t have the Alpy calibration module and have never had any calibration issues with Isis just using one of those Relco bulbs at the end of my refractor. I did wonder if I would gain anything by having it at the ccd end although I have read an article describing using a tilt mirror setup fitted the wrong way round to use a calibration bulb at the eyepiece end!!. I just made a cap to go on the end of my scope with the bulb fitted in the centre and I just take a fresh single 120 sec shot each session which seems to do the job ok!.

Have you seen that Francois Cochard is running a student project on automatic calibration of LISA/ALPY using the calibration NeAr lamp (see posts on spectro-l)? He is calling for examples of lamp spectra from a range of spectrographs for practical tests. It might be interesting to see what that turns up. A single lamp in front of the scope produces very sharp lines as, being a point source with a very high f ratio, it is effectively free of any focus errors or aberrations in the spectrograph so probably makes line identification easier with less blending. If you put it at the edge of the aperture (The centre does not work with scopes with a central obstruction of course!) you have to be careful to align it with the slit though otherwise you get offsets.
