ALPY/Lisa: 460Ex+414ex?

Post by Simon de Visscher »

Dear all,

I am still looking for a replacement (cooled) camera that will go on the ALPY guiding port instead of the 178mm. The reason for getting a cooled camera is that I want to be able to locale faint targets (galaxies mostly).

I have the opportunity to by a second-hand 460ex. His weight close to 400gr sufficiently low to be supported by the mechanics of ALPY guiding port. It is just a pity that the camera form factor increase sensibly the torque compared to that of 314 or Titan.

I already have a 414ex which works pretty well and that I use as the science cam on the ALPY.

Looking at the specs of both cameras

* pixel size --> Atik 414ex is better (414/460 pixel surface ratio: 2)
* dark current--> Atik 460ex is better (414/460 noise ratio: 0.5)
* RON: --> 414 is better but by 20% only (RMS ratio).
* quantum efficiency --> both models are very close in performance
* sampling: with the ALPY@23um the best camera is the ATIK414ex with a sampling close to 3.5. A 2x2 binning of the 460ex gives 2.5, which is a bit low (and no binning leads to a massive oversampling). Now on the other hand if one day I go to the LISA with a 35um slit (which would definitely help on the newton 400 f5), the Atik460ex has the best sampling (but the 414ex is still ok-ish).

So in case I get this 460ex, it would serve on the ALPY as the guiding camera while the 414ex would remain the science one. And if I decide to get a LISA then I could basically swap them.

While this sounds like a reasonable (and long term) plan, do you think I miss something here?

Best,

Simon

Hi Simon,

I am using a ASI 174MM Mini on the guide port of my LISA and so far I find it very sensitive and low noise. I use PHD for guiding applying a dark pixel map.

The 174 has a 5.86µm pixel size. With 1 or 2 seconds exposure time I do see in the guide window stars up to mag 10 without a problem. Bortle Sky ~6

Sometimes even mag 11 or 12 depending of the sky glow = relative Humidity

Looks like both camera models are discontinued unless you find a used one.

The thing is: for extra-faint targets (Mv=17 or even 18+), their positioning on the slit requires to see them with the guiding cam, which means exposures of 1 or 2 min maybe. On short exposures the 178mm that I use has roughly the same SNR as the 174mm (smaller pixels but smaller RON as well) but clearly the dark current becomes problematic if the exposure gets longer than a couple of tens of seconds. Hence my move to a cooled camera.

Hi Simon,

If I have clear sky tonight I can test the ASI 174MM and send you some scrrenshots.

Hi Simon,

I have the ASI 174MM on the guide port of a Lisa and so I can send you screenshots in *.fit format as PHD saves the images of the guide window in FIT.

As soon as I hve clear sky I will do it. At the moment I see sm clouds here.

Any special region of the sky in the Northern hemisphere starting at the Equator ? Some Palm trees block my Southern Sky :x
