The reference paper provided by Andrew is a very good summary of the spectral sampling issue. When I talk about pseudo noise, this includes the problem of aliasing, widely described in the article. I add also the critical point of (pseudo) noise induced by the spectra processing (interpolation algorithm for example).
About a similar subject, I suggest to read this paper about the notion of spectral resolution and you will see that it is often arbitrary or poorly defined:

In particular, I suggest also to examine the situation of the projected circle, which is the basis with fiber spectrographs, which is quite different from the resolution of a split spectrograph, which I discuss here:
