Hello from New Jersey

Post by Kevin Alton »

Greetings:

By way of introduction my name is Kevin Alton and I reside under the light polluted skies of New Jersey (USA) about 30 miles west of New York City. I’m retired after a 40+ year career in Pharmaceutical Research specializing in the analytical methodologies used to separate, purify and characterize the structure of drugs and their metabolites. My educational background includes advanced degrees in chemistry, physics and analytical chemistry. About ten years ago I started to get involved with astronomy as a hobby and decided in 2007 to build a backyard observatory for more serious study (http://www.underoakobservatory.com/Publications.html) of variable stars and minor planets. Most time on clear nights is spent collecting light curve data but on occasion I collect spectra from interesting celestial objects (eg Nova Del 2013) using a low resolution SBIG DSS-7 coupled with a dedicated ST-402ME ccd camera. I've joined this forum to share data as well as to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge from the ARAS membership. Ultimately I would like to collaborate with other like-minded investigators who have equipment sensitive enough to generate radial velocity data from fairly faint (~Vmag 9-12) stars. The determined mass ratio from these RV data would help constrain Roche modeling results from light curves generated by eclipsing binary systems which is an area of study particularly interesting to me.

Clear Skies!
