Confirmation de redshift sur MPA J0705-1224

Post by Lionel Mulato »

Have you considered using the sky emission lines as wavelength calibration markers to improve your RV precision? These will be very accurate as they pass through the same optics at the same time as the target

Bonjour Lionel,

Hi Robin,
No I've never tried such calibration. That's indeed a good idea. I'll try to find a list of sky emission lines (atmospheric or light pollution) ?
Bonjour Michel,

Amicalement,
Michel

The H alpha wavelength of the possible PNe looks identical to that of the surrounding H alpha emission nebula.

In my opinion it is in our galaxy and is unlikely to be a background galaxy

I do not understand why you do not believe your RV values. These values are consistent with objects in our own galaxy
NGC1514 for example has an RV of +59.8 km/s

Michel,

Robin,

That is exactly the point. Ha line falls at the same horizontal coordinate as the surrounding nebula.
When not redshifted lines fall always at x=506 for Ha ; x=282 for [OIII] 5007.
I should be able to see that redshift on the 2D spectrum but that's not the case.
I also think the RV (if reliable) is consistent with an object in our galaxy.
But the optical morphology and the absence of WISE detection (MIR) make Quentin Parker rather thinks it could be a galaxy than a PN.
I'll try to re-calibrate my Alpy more accurately and hope somebody will attempt to take a spectrum of this object :)
Thanks for your help.

Hi Lionel,

Do you know the RV of the nebula ? Perhaps that is also redshifted
You could check your calibration using the strong auroral lines in the spectrum. For example

Hi Robin

The surrounding nebula is IC 2177, its RV is ~18 km/s according to this paper : https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/link_gate ... 3M/ADS_PDF

I re-calibrate my Alpy more accurately.
The table below shows the position of some non blended sky lines, the position of nebular lines of MPA J0705-1224 and IC 2177.

Conclusion :
No reliable shift is measured for the sky lines nor for the Ha line of IC 2177. Their spectral shift is smaller than the uncertainties of measurement.
The lines of MPA J0705-1224 seem to be shifted after skylines removal.
The new RV is 113 ±88 km/s.

The RV error is very large, still needs a better resolution spectrum ! :)
